The Act that deals with issues surrounding child law is the The Children Act 1989.  This Act gives the Courts powers over matters involving children such as deciding :

• who has contact with children
• who the child should live with (residence)
• who has the right to make important decisions about the children (Parental Responsibility).

Of course it is always in everybody's best interests to try and resolve matters without applying to the Court.  Sometimes however this is simply not possible and legal advice and representation is essential.
