Transport Projects in and around Nottingham

This part of the website deals with road, trains and light railway projects within the greater Nottingham Area. It is not comprehensive and we would welcome any comments on any future projects.  When buying a property it can be helpful to consider future transport projects. Clearly if your property is sited near a project there is likely to be a downside in terms of disruption, noise and pollution. On the other hand if you are in an area which is likely to benefit from a future transport project of whatever nature property values could increase.

Nottingham Express Transit - NET Line (Nottingham Tram Line)

The Nottingham Express Transit (NET) (also known as the Nottingham Tram Line) has one line at present which is NET Line 1. This runs from Hucknall through Bulwell, Hyson Green and then into the City Centre and down to Nottingham Railway Station. There is an additional line to Phoenix Park near the M1 Motorway at Junction 26. This has been highly successful and carries ten million passengers a year.  Based upon this NET 2 is being developed. This consists of 2 routes, firstly to Clifton, Nottingham going through Wilford and secondly down to Chilwell and that line goes past the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. The Clifton route is Line 2 and the Chilwell route Line 3.

The Position at the moment on NET 2

Tenders were received in 2010 and have now been granted.
The plan at present is that construction starts in late 2011 with the new lines open for service in 2014.

The routes in more detail:

Net Line 2
This will start from Nottingham Railway Station and this will link to NET Line 1 (the existing route to Hucknall) The route will then run along Queens Walk through the Meadows, over Wilford Bridge and then run through Wilford and Compton Acres.  It will then go to Clifton along Farnborough Road and Southchurch Drive and eventually to a Park and ride site close to the A453 Junction 24 of the M1 Motorway. Please see our section on the A453 project for website.

For a map showing this route please go to http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/netphase2/index.aspx?articleid=7520.

Net Line 3

This route leaves Nottingham Railway Station and at this point Net Line 2 links with NET 1 (The existing route to Hucknall). This route runs along Meadows Way then going through the NG2 business park. It goes along Lenton Lane and Gregory Street to the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. At that point there will be transport serving the QMC. The route then goes in to the University Park Campus before going on the South side of the University Boulevard Highfield Science Park. It goes through Beeston Town Centre along Chilwell High Road and then finally stops at a new Park and Ride Site at Toton Lane next to the A52 and close to Junction 25.
As with NET Line 2 it will be possible to connect to the NET Line 1 therefore allowing passengers to travel on this route to the centre of Nottingham and then beyond up to Hucknall.  The projection for Lines 2 and 3 is to attract 13 million passengers a year. Therefore given that NET Line 1 has ten million passengers per year the total passenger journeys through the network would be twenty three million.

Our view is that plans for these extensions of the tram system are exciting projects and should do a great deal for Nottingham City and the Greater Nottingham area.

Gedling Railway Line Nottingham

This involves Gedling Village.  At present there is a disused railway line which runs from Netherfield up to Gedling. Proposals have been made to have Robin Hood 2 trains per hour running from Nottingham railway station to Gedling Village. However it must be stressed that at the moment no there are no firm proposals.

Ilkeston Train Station

A feasibility study was commissioned by Derbyshire County Council in 2009 in connection with plans to build a new railway station at Ilkeston. The site identified is off Coronation Road on existing Erewash Railway Line. The feasibility study by Derbyshire County Council suggested that the station could generate around 120 thousand passengers a year and it is likely that it would be linked to the planned Nottingham to Leeds service.

Clearly it should mean much better transport links between Ilkeston and Nottingham and make Ilkeston much more attractive for commuters.

Planned Station at Newton near Bingham

As part of the Nottinghamshire County Council transport plan for 2011 there is a proposal that there be a new station at Newton should planning permission be granted for 2 proposed large scale developments in the Bingham area. The first is for 1000 homes north of the railway line in Bingham and the second additional development for 1500 homes in an eco-village at Newton.  There is likely to be a Tesco store on Chapel Lane, Bingham although there is some opposition to this.

It seems clear that if those developments go through then it would be sensible to increase public transport links and that either means substantial improvements to Bingham Station (and in either case creation of a Park and Ride) or a new station at Newton or of course both.

Hucknall Town Centre Improvement Scheme

The County Council is proposing the following in connection with Hucknall:

Small Marble 2  Pedestrianising the area between the Market Place and the Junction
    of Watnall Road

Small Marble 2  A new relief road between Annesley Road and Station Road

We would comment that this is the second major improvement to Hucknall's transport in recent years the first of course being the construction of the NET 1 Line to Hucknall from the City Centre.

A46 Newark to Widmerpool

This is a major scheme which commenced in July 2009 and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2012. It involves the conversion of the existing A46 into a dual carriage way from Newark to Widmerpool on the A606 and runs for 17 miles. Within Nottinghamshire it is bound to benefit Newark, Bingham, Radcliffe and Cotgrave. From Newark it is going to provide much better access to Nottingham (although there is a problem with the A52 see below).  From Bingham, Cotgrave and Radcliffe it is going to provide far better access to Leicester and the M1 (just under 30 miles to the south) and all points after that and of course Newark.

A52 Improvement Clifton to Bingham. Radcliffe bypass. River crossing at Radcliffe On Trent.

We refer to a report on the Nottinghamshire County Council website www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk. This is a report in 2004 referring to a previous study whereby there was a recommendation that the whole of the A52 route between Clifton, and Bingham be upgraded to a dual carriage way. This would link with the dualling of the A46 which is actually now being carried out. It is now however clear was where the dual carriage way would go at Radcliffe.

This links to a new river crossing on the River Trent. In the last decade proposals have been made for a further crossing over the River Trent. At present in the Greater Nottingham area there are three crossings, one at Clifton Bridge, one at Trent Bridge and one at Lady Bay Bridge. It is though that in the future they would be insufficient.

Two sites have been suggested. The first is at Gamston near West Bridgford and the second is at Radcliffe on Trent. The County Council supported a Bridge at Radcliffe (which will presumably be close to the existing railway bridge over the Trent at that point) but pointed out that a bridge would only be feasible if linked to the Radcliffe bypass and the duelling of the A52.

A453. Widening from M1 Junction 24 to A52 in Nottingham

The A453 which runs along this route pass Clifton Estate is a single carriage way road with extremely heavy traffic. It is one of the three routes into the Nottingham City Centre from the M1 and is not only extremely congested but roads be unsafe. Over the years there have been numerous proposals to redevelop this route as a duel carriage way and such a scheme is long overdue. The current position is that in October 2010 it was announced that these improvements would not be for another 5 years. However, we do understand that this project will now be listed in future spending reviews but the timing is still not certain.

High Speed Two (HS2) Birmingham to Leeds

This is a proposed High Speed Railway between London and Birmingham and then on to Manchester on the West of the Country and Leeds on the East of the Country. The significance of the route to Leeds from the East Midlands is that there will be stations in the East Midlands. A number of stations have been suggested.  At the present time (March 2011) it has been suggested that there would be an H.S.2 Station at Nottingham Parkway (between Clifton and East Midlands Airport and near Junction 24 of the M1) and then a link to Nottingham Station.  If that were the case then journey times from London to Nottingham would be cut drastically.  This development is likely to take place in around 2030.
